Chapter 13
His husky voice carried a command that brooked no refusal.
Vivian Bennett's heart raced wildly.
She could only nod, her mind completely blank.
When Liam Sullivan helped her out of the car, her legs felt weak and unsteady.
Everything that had just happened felt like a dream.
The powerful boss, Liam Sullivan, wanted to marry her.
He had almost taken her right there in the car.
It all felt too surreal.
Trembling, she dialed her best friend Sophia Miller's number.
She told her she was safe and had gotten away.
Then she took a taxi back to her cousin's house.
Her cousin's husband, Jason Harper, answered the door.
"Vivian, you're back?" He smiled warmly, his tone gentle.
He was a completely different person from the furious man who had slammed the door last night.
Vivian stood frozen for a moment.
She finally gave a hesitant nod.
She changed her shoes and entered the living room.
Her cousin Grace Harper was sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Vivian hurried over to her. "Cousin, did you two make up?"
Grace beamed. "Yes. Your brother-in-law specially bought groceries and cooked tonight. He even apologized."
Vivian was shocked. "Apologized?"
She had lived with her cousin for months and knew Jason's temperament well.
He was extremely proud and stubbornly chauvinistic. He never easily admitted he was wrong.
Last night he had been hurling insults. Today he was apologizing. It was very strange.
Grace squeezed her hand, smiling. "Your brother-in-law said you're welcome to stay as long as you want."
"What?" Vivian couldn't believe it.
That stingy brother-in-law who resented her for freeloading had suddenly changed his attitude.
Before she could process it, Jason brought over a fruit platter.
"Have some fruit." He politely offered her an apple.
Vivian hesitantly took it. "Thank you, brother-in-law..."
Jason took the initiative to make amends. "Vivian, I was wrong last night. I spoke too harshly. Please don't take it to heart."
Vivian was acutely aware of her dependent situation.
She had to play along. "It's fine. I'll find a place and move out as soon as possible."
Jason immediately frowned. "Are you still angry with me?"
Vivian shook her head. "I'm not..."
Jason quickly interjected. "Then just stay here peacefully. It's close to the corporate headquarters. Your commute will be convenient."
Vivian was stunned. "Corporate headquarters?"
Jason smiled broadly. "The whole company is talking about it. Mr. Sullivan personally requested your transfer to the main office."
Vivian's expression changed.
She finally understood the reason for her brother-in-law's sudden change in attitude.
It was because of Liam Sullivan's special attention.
Jason said meaningfully, "To gain Mr. Sullivan's favor... your future is limitless. No wonder you looked down on the blind dates I arranged."
Vivian hurried to explain. "Brother-in-law, I..."
Jason waved his hand, cutting her off. "I understand! Once you're at headquarters, you must look out for me. Help me get a promotion too..."
