Chapter 46

The knocking came again.

Grace Harper walked to the door, puzzled.

She opened it.

A tall, imposing man stood outside.

His striking looks stole her breath away.

Grace froze. "May I ask who you're looking for?"

Liam Sullivan hadn't expected anyone else inside.

His brow furrowed slightly.

Vivian Bennett rushed over. "Cousin, he's my boss."

She quickly took the bag from his hand.

She forced a smile. "Thank you for personally delivering my bag, Boss Liam. It's late, I won't keep you any longer."

She began closing the door.

Liam's expression darkened instantly.

Vivian slammed the door shut.

He stood outside, his eyes unreadable.

No one had ever dared treat him this way.

Grace stared at Vivian in shock. "He's really your boss?"

Vivian looked down, checking her bag. "Yes."

Grace couldn't believe it. "You just shut him out like that?"

Vivian pressed her lips together. "He was just here to return my bag."

Resentment churned inside her.

That sudden kiss in the car flashed through her mind.

It made her want to rebel.

Grace asked with concern, "Are you unhappy at work?"

Vivian was silent for a moment.

In the past, she would have quit immediately.

But not now.

Her cousin's marriage depended on her keeping this job.

Jason Harper's improved attitude toward Grace was entirely because Vivian had transferred to the headquarters.

If she quit now, her cousin's husband's demeanor would surely turn ugly.

Grace had already sacrificed too much for her.

She couldn't stand by and watch her cousin's marriage fall apart.

Vivian took a deep breath. "Cousin, my job is fine."

Grace still looked worried. "But just now—"

Vivian cut her off. "It was just a small misunderstanding."

She turned and walked toward the kitchen.

Her mind was in turmoil.

Liam's intense gaze lingered in her thoughts.

That man was too dangerous.

She had to keep her distance.

Grace followed her. "Vivian, if you're unhappy, don't force yourself."

Vivian shook her head. "It's really nothing."

She had to persevere.

For her cousin.

And for herself.

The night deepened.

Vivian tossed and turned in bed.

There had been no sound from outside for a long time.

Liam must have left.

Yet she felt an inexplicable emptiness.

This feeling unsettled her.

She forced her eyes closed.

She had work tomorrow.

She couldn't afford to overthink.

Moonlight filtered through the gap in the curtains.

Vivian sighed softly.

This job.

She had to continue.
